benny-besfer-chaim

With the advent of the brand new year of 5777, Benny Friedman releases a melodious good year wish to the community, an upbeat song called “B’sefer Chaim.”

“Lchaim, Lchaim, Lchaim Tovim…” goes the refrain, and Benny hopes the gentle but cheerful notes will inspire people to prepare for the new year with a sense of optimism.

Just in this one short Tefilla, we make eight requests of Hashem for the upcoming year,” says Benny, “because this is our tradition: hold nothing back, Daven for everything, and start the year confidently with incredible faith and trust that when we ask for good things, our dear Father in Heaven will certainly provide it.

Referencing the Baal HaTanya’s famous parable of a king visiting the people in the field and greeting them all smilingly and lovingly, Benny says he hopes the song will remind Yidden that even more than we want to be blessed, Hashem wants to bless us. Who wouldn’t be ecstatic to hear that? So let’s greet the year joyfully.

The song is composed by Eli Klein, arranged by Eli Klein and Yitzy Berry and produced by Sruly Meyer.

May 5777 indeed bring about the greatest blessings to everyone who needs them. “Lchaim, Lchaim, Lchaim Tovim!”

Enjoy.

Inspiring Voice Reviews Dovid Dachs – Shiras Hayam

It’s a wonderful geshmak to hear young bachurim singing. They still have the innocence of a youth, but have already developed the enthusiasm of the “bucherishe yuren” (teenage years in Yeshiva). This album was produced with the support from his Rosh Yeshiva and Rebbeim all recordings were done Bein Hasdorim! This is quite evident by the inspiring mood and style of the song selection and singing.

Dovid Dachs – the son of the famous singer Shloimie Dachs, and an alumni of Shalsheles Junior released a masterpiece of an album called “Shiras Hayam”. There are several other singers including his father Shloimie and his fellow Shalsheles Junior alumnus Avromi Schwebel –  the son of the renowned singer Rivie Schwebel.

The album was carefully produced over the period of a year by the veteran producer Shloimie Kaufman. It was arranged by the ultra talented Nochi Krohn and performed by the Shloimie Dachs Orchestra with the top of the line musicians.Eight of his friends joined to perform as a choir and they call themselves the Koleinu Choir. As mentioned above, it is a unique experience because these sound like real people singing professionally – yet with a hartzige and haimishe feeling. The music is arranged by Nochi Krohn with his unmatched heart and soul and Shloimie Kaufman.

It is comprised of 5 tracks made up of medleys.

They are as follows.

1- Carlebach , which has “Hidden Nigun, Shuva Hashem, Ufrois Oleinu, and Orech Yamim and finishes off with “Hidden Nigun” again.

2- Hartz, which has Ranenu from Shwekey, Chamoil from Shloimie Dachs, Kad Yasvin from Benny Friedman and Moidim from Shloimie Taussig.

There are additional soloist in these 2 medleys – the proud father Shloimie Dachs, Shloimie Kauman, and Avi Tatel

3- Abie (as in Abie Rotenberg) consisting of Naar Hoyisi, Small Piece of Heaven, Min Hameitzar, Man from Vilna, Memories, Ani Maamin, and a booming Vinismach to cap it off. Additional solos from Shloimie Dachs, Dovid’s brother Moishe Dachs and Shloimie Kaufman.

4 – Shabbos – Sholom Aleichim – MBD Kissufim, Gut Shabbos – Carlebach, Sholom Aleichem – Benny Friedman composed by Ari Goldwag,Boi Bishlolom – Shwekey, Ain Aroch – Baruch Levine, and Carlebach Havdala

5 – Shiras Hayam which is a Haimishe medley. This includes the famous “Viafilu Behastura” by Yoily Klein that became a smashing hit. Also Ani Maamin – Moishe Goldman, Breslover Niggun, Chabad Niggun, Ain Shum Yiush from Breslov (although I think the tune is Karlin-Stolin)

Additional solos were Shloimie Dachs and Avromi Schwebel (!) his buddy from Shalsheles Junior.

The song selection is wonderful and very geshmak. The choir is beautiful and hartzig with gorgeous harmonies. The songs in each medley are from the very best and they flow one after another like a perfect tapestry. It’s really worth it to add to your collection. Let me rephrase that. It will enhance your collection and perhaps influence you to modify it.

GAD ELBAZ ft NISSIM “L’chaim” Promo

A trip to an antique store catapults Israeli singing sensation Gad Elbaz back through the generations to a 19th century Ukrainian shtetl, a simpler time and place where, despite the lack of modern conveniences, happiness was all around for the taking.

L’chaim, a Sparks Next production by filmmaker Daniel Finkelman, is a joyous expression in contrasts, as energy and nostalgia, klezmer and hip hop and past and present come together in an exuberant celebration of life. Elbaz finds himself warmly welcomed by villagers and their rabbi, rapper Nissim Black, and together they capture the euphoria of days gone by, where all you needed to be happy was a big smile and a hearty glass of spirits on which to make a heartfelt L ‘chaim.

In a world where we find ourselves overscheduled and overburdened by gadgets designed to make our lives easier, L’chaim captures the purity of days gone by and our deep longing for the most elusive goal of all, true happiness.

Mordechai Shapiro – Kol HaDerech

Every once in a while, I come across an album that I truly enjoy, where I don’t skip from song to song to find the ones I actually appreciate listening to.  Mordechai Shapiro’s Kol HaDerech is that album.  The songs are fun and spirited, yet beautiful and full of emotion at the same time.  The music on this album is incredible, and the piano work stands out to me as particularly unbelievable.  And that voice…  While I truly appreciate each song, I’ll highlight just a few of my favorites.

KOL HADERECH – The first time I heard this song on Jroot radio, I knew I had to track down its origins.  The rhyming pattern of the chorus stood out to me as particularly striking, and while it took me a few tries to actually get the lyrics down pat, it’s a really enjoyable song to sing.

SCHAR MITZVAH – I actually saw the music video before I was able to track down the album, and it really intrigued me.  This is probably one of the most fun songs out there, with a beat that is funky and distinctive.  When I heard my sister singing her camp song to the tune of Schar Mitzvah, I knew that I wasn’t the only one who thought this song was a winner – apparently it had taken off over the summer, and has become a front-runner everywhere, from camps to my morning carpools.

KI MALACHOV – The high part of this song really struck me as beautiful, and the emotion with which Shapiro sings truly enhances the impassioned plea for Hashem’s constant shemira.

IVDU – What a fun song that engenders true simcha!  Each time he sings “Ivdu,” Shapiro adds another variation, which makes it exciting to sing along and keep up with his twists and turns.

LO ALECHA – This song is Shapiro’s own composition, and the personal touch adds to the inspiration of the song.  The coupling together of “Lo Alecha” and “Kol HaOlam” make for a thought-provoking listen.

As I listen to this album over and over (and over!) again, it’s a pleasure to hear how much fun Shapiro seems to have had in his recording.  His passion and emotion for the lyrics are evident, and if you’re looking to feel inspired and passionate in your singing, this album is it.  To Mrs. Shapiro, my seventh grade teacher – wishing you much nachas from your truly talented son!

Yosef Zev Braver, who is not only an exceptional singer and performer, but a certified youth and parent coach, has teamed up with arranger Yanki Cohen to produce this breathtaking clip that was filmed in the Judean Desert, entitled “Ki Lo Yidach” – Hashem will leave no one behind. This is an especially important message before Yom Kippur, to tell us all that here’s no despair in the world for Hashem is our ever-most loving and forgiving Father in Heaven.

The lyrics are:
Ki lo yidach mimeno nidach – (Hebrew for “Hashem will leave no one behind”).
Veil ven a Yid falt aveck, falt ehr arup Tzum Abishter’s hant (Yiddish for “When a Jew falls away, he falls right into Hashem’s hand”).
Mimcha – fun Dir (Hebrew and Yiddish for “from You”)
Ailecha – Tzu Dir (Hebrew and Yiddish for “to You”)
Evrach (Hebrew for “I shall flee” – in other words, whenever I’m in trouble or whenever I fall, I shall flee to You, Hashem, for You promised that no one will be left behind).

Eytan – Do You Believe

do-you-believe-final-cover

‘Do You Believe’s’ core meaning is about spirituality. It’s an idea more people can connect with, says Eytan. ‘Do You Believe’ came to life 3-4 days before Eytan performed it at Chazaq’s annual concert, which took place at Queens College, on April 3rd. The feedback was beyond imaginable, and it was decided to release the track as a single. Combining a dance beat with inspirational lyrics, ‘Do You Believe’ is quickly becoming a smash hit amongst both religious and non-religious sectors.
Following his previous hits played on Jewish radio stations around the world (Shir Lama’alot, The Truth feat. Gad Elbaz, Bo’er Kmo Esh & L’Hamshich feat. Itzik Orlev), Eytan is looking forward to having ‘Do You Believe’ added to the list.

Chabad composer Sarah Dukes’ new piano solo album “Life Sometimes” has passed the initial voting stage and is now officially included on the 59th GRAMMY Awards ballots under the “New Age” category.

The Grammy Award is an honor awarded by The Recording Academy to recognize outstanding achievement in the music industry, and recognizes the best recordings, compositions and artists of the eligibility year, which runs from October 1, 2015 to September 30, 2016.

“I am super excited and completely humbled…I feel so privileged to be a part of all this,” Dukes wrote on her facebook page at www.facebook.com/sarahdukesmusic.

Dukes composes her music as a hobby in between raising her five children and working as a mental health counselor. Her second album “Life Sometimes” was selected as a winner in the Global Music Awards, honored with a Silver Medal for Outstanding Achievement in the New Age Solo Piano and Album categories, and was ranked #17 on Zone Music Reporter’s “Top 100 Radio Airplay Chart”.

“From its onset, Life Sometimes takes you by the hand, and guides you through an intricate and prismatic Soundscape that seems to touch on every imaginable human sentiment,” shares BT Fasmer from newagemusic.guide. “To be included on such a prestigious award ballot is a tremendous honor and hopefully will inspire other lubavitchers to develop and share their talents that Hashem gives them,” Dukes shared exclusively with COLlive. “It is an amazing zechus to be able to show that a frum, chassidic woman can also be recognized as contributing in the music world.”

Dukes’ piano solo albums and singles, performed by Yaron Gershovsky, are available in Judaica stores and online at mostlymusic.com, iTunes, and Amazon, and on her website www.sarahdukesmusic.com where you can also purchase sheet music.

A Tribute to Chabad

“Harninu” is the latest release from Rogers Park’s – “America’s Favorite Hassidic Folk Band.”

Yosef Peysin, songwriter and vocalist for Rogers Park, explains why this niggun was chosen as the first Lubavitcher niggun to be released by the duo since their inception in 2013:

“We are lucky enough to travel to, and meet with, dozens of communities throughout the year. Before every show we ask ourselves, if we are able to have the complete attention for many people for the next hour, what can we communicate that will make the greatest impact in our short time? We always come down to this basic message that, in our eyes, we sums up the avodah of Dor Hashvii.

The niggun of Harninu Goyim is a reference to the neshama as it is currently in the body. “Vos zul men zurgen…” translates to “What are we going to worry about what will be tomorrow when the debt collector will come?”

This is a reference to the end of our time when our neshama leaves our body and we will be held accountable for our choices and actions in this world.

“Es Meg Duch Zein…”

Whatever mitzvos we take and perform in this world, that is the bottom line, which can be considered the most important.

“Harninu Goyim…”

Eventually Moshiach will come and the Yidden as a klal will be raised up.

The question we should be asking ourselves: What are we doing today, maaseh b’poel, to bring Moshiach!??

We would like to give a special thank you to all that Chabad communites that have hosted us over this, and to all those that encouraged us to produce Chabad niggunim.

Rogers Park has been awarded “Continuum Theatre’s Best Chicagoland Jewish Band” and “Chabad’s Newest Music Craze”. Follow their music, tours, and antics on

British Orthodox pop star Eitan Freilich has released a music video for “Am Yisrael Chai”, the title track of his recently released debut album from producer Avi Newmark (previously produced Benny Friedman and Dovid Gabay).

Directed by Hadassah Chen and “based on an idea” by Jewbellish’s Mendy Pellin, the amusing video depicts a straight-laced Freilich, vacationing in Israel, learning to loosen up with the help of a young boy and an English-impaired cabbie. The song itself is an upbeat pop number with thoughtful lyrics reassuring Israel during tumultuous times.

Eitan Freilich’s debut album, Am Yisrael Chai, is available on iTunes, Amazon, Google Play, and Mostly Music. Freilich himself can be found on Facebook and at efmusic.co.uk

Eitan writes:
A few months ago I had the z’chus of leading the davening throughout shabbos at Congregation Ohab Tzedek in Manhattan. After mussaf, an elderly man (although with a youthful bounce to his step) by the name of Rene Slotkin approached me, gave me a yasher koach and wished me a gut shabbos…
After speaking about how he was a survivor of Auschwitz, he then told me the incredible story of how the actual numbers on his arm served as testimony that Hashem was with him throughout his time in the death camp.
